CRITICS & RATINGS

Heiko is a pleasure for the eye as well as for the gay heart that doesn’t need to establish identity yet another time. The story arrives to the screen in the midst of a relationship with an elegant series of footage and a strong grasp of composition, which immediately makes it stand out. It is not compromising itself by explaining background or fetish, but simply expecting the audience to tag along.

The story is about a very specific fetish and while it maneuvers very easily around the traps of patronizing either audience, characters or both, it is at the same time not afraid of the laughter that arrives when one recognizes a cliché.

This balance act seems to be done effortlessly.

ROSA LUX, President of the Jury at the MIX:CPH Film Festival (DK)

--

"An extreme take of fetishistic obsession in a relationship between partners. While shot in a warm bright composition, the film has a foreboding darkness as soon as the title card started. Cautionary tale of power play, obedience, and disrespect with an even grimmer twist."

KaramelKinema (Indonesia)

With a summary line that reads "a carefree young man really puts his foot in it with his obsessive lover," the nature of this short is all but obvious. For this is but a surreal ode to foot fetishes, one in which writer and director David Bonneville plays power game style, only to take an abrupt right turn in the closing frames to deliver a shocking twist to his well-executed tale.

Thankfully Jaime Freitas as Heiko, namely the techno loving young man of the piece and José Manuel Mendes as his sugar-daddy styled lover Homem play it for all it’s worth, a master / slave relationship that mirrors their on / off cinematic bond, one that is taken to the extreme in this decidedly dark tale of fetish disrespect. Enough said.

DAVID HALL, GayCelluloid.com (USA)

If you’re a fan of the straightforward, after Steam you might be hoping for something a little more obvious, but if anything Heiko takes things in an even stranger direction. In this Portuguese short, a young man (who’s pretty sexy and spends much of the film wearing little more than shorts) returns from the beach, where an older man is waiting for him. The old man seems unimpressed, but what initially appears to be a fairly simple film about a sugar daddy relationship takes a left turn when we cut to the young man writhing on the floor wrapped head to toe in ropes – and it only gets stranger and more disturbing after that. With some interesting ideas about power dynamics and that a younger and older man may well both be using one another in a relationship, Heiko is weird but intriguing, while the ending is a bit freaky.
7 out of 10

TIM ISAAC, BigGayPictureShow.com (UK)

--

Shot like a stylish feature, with extremely clever camera work and strongly believable acting, the film is blackly funny and thoroughly unsettling, partly because of the lack of background music and partly because the story gets bleak and creepy as it implies that things are going to just get worse and worse before the end.

RICH CLINE, Shadows On The Wall (UK)

--

"Heiko does what it does well (...) it’s something I could see being adapted into a series"

TIMOTHY BREACH, Constrained Film Reviews (UK)

--

"illuminato regista portoghese"

Franco Mutti (IT)

--

"De belles images (...) le film est bien cadré et soigneusement éclairé."
