REVIEWS

"the highly original short film 'Cigano'"
BFI • BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE (UK)

--

“Cigano, one of the most awarded films of Portuguese Cinema.”
PORTUGUESE ACADEMY of FILM (PT)

--

“His Cigano (Gypsy), shot in Portugal, is an exciting combination of sexual promise and imminent terror. You may not want to hitch a lift ever again after seeing it.”

Philip Wyn-Jones, IRIS PRIZE Selection Committee Jury (WALES)

--

"Cigano is easily one of the best films that has ever been submitted to Cinema Jam. It left me speechless, which is unusual for me. We don't even use a star system here, but I'm making an exception for this film: 5 out of 5 stars!"

Jared Fryer, CINEMAJAM (UK)

--

“(David’s) work is both traditional narrative storytelling, but also contemporary in form and content. It’s complex and innovative. He’s able to create extreme tension and hold the audience’s attention with a masterful hand. Gypsy is a unique piece of filmmaking that I believe demonstrates his directing prowess."

Claudette Godfrey, SXSW Senior Film Programmer (USA)

--

"The evening became more exciting with the screening of the Portuguese short “Gypsy” (David Bonneville) – where a wealthy young man has an issue with his car’s tire and is helped by a Gypsy passer-by. The Gypsy then impels the young man to give him a ride in exchange for his help. Throughout the entire journey there is tension hovering between the two characters, and an obvious social abyss dividing them. The way the Gypsy imposes himself reminded me, at first glance, of Paulo Miklos in the “The Tresspasser” (Beto Brant). The unusual ending subverted the expectations and did not limit the work to a mere social statement. An excellent choice."

Joyce Pais, CINEMASCOPE magazine (BRAZIL)

--

"With the taut pacing of a Patricia Highsmith story, ‘Cigano’ is relatable. We have all been in situations when someone has forced their presence upon us and brings out sides to our character that we don’t want to air. It is not about the tension between Portuguese and gypsies per se but between any group of haves and have-nots. The confined space and empty roads add to the atmosphere. Bonneville’s film (...) was shot over four days on a RED camera, with very professional production values"

Larry Oliver, FILM ANNEX (UK)

--

"A situation comedy filled with "portuguesisms", David Bonneville does not hesitate to use some stereotypes (eg, the social classes represented by the protagonists) to drive his story, unpretentious and humorously, towards an open ending that may not be that predictable."

Samuel Andrade, THE SHORT GUIDE TO MOVIES (Portugal)

--

"David Bonneville presents us with Cigano. With an impressive curriculum (it has been selected by festivals in cities like Locarno, Toronto and Cannes), this is one of the top favourite winners of the Best Fiction Award at Faro Int. Short Film Festival. Technically impeccable, Bonneville gives room for the actors to create suspense and allows for character development. The director attains an extraordinary result by inciting the audience through his camera work. Exploring social and moral implications, the film’s ending is thought-provoking to any kind of audience. Cigano is undoubtedly one of the best films that has screened at FARCUME."

Diogo Simão, ESPALHA-FACTOS (Portugal)

--

“the film toys in a very intelligent way with clichés. The story is simple, yet subtextual.”

Ion Indolean, FILMSENSE (Romania)

--

"Bonneville has culled together a masterful wee tale of “Will he or won’t he?” as wealthy Whitebread Sebastian’s (Jaime Freitas) flat tire is expertly replaced by an extra-alluring local whose hot gypsy blood becomes increasingly hard to resist.
Refusing cash for the errand of mercy (no better way to demonstrate a different sort of intent than merely quick commerce), the olive-skinned Good Samaritan (Tiago Aldeia) quite literally steals his way into the passenger seat (curiously akin to Bahar, it appears that this road trip might also involve identity loss…).
Magically, intriguingly—after an “oh, that’s too predictable” brush with the law thankfully becomes just a clever red herring—three cheers for the smart script!—Sebastian takes a possibly rare, deep toke on the shared joint then completely turns the tables and shifts into high gear. Now, will that be a Thelma and Louise exit, a touch of Flesh heat or a full helping of Sebastiane martyrdom? Can’t wait for the full-length sequel." JWR

James Wegg, WHEN CULTURES COLLIDE (USA)

--

" David Bonneville signs the screenplay of this complex and seductive narrative (...) that makes us think (imagine) about the inevitability of certain relationships, people we cross paths with and friendships, and how in one way or another they change our destinies. "

Paulo Peralta, CINEUPHORIA (Portugal)

--

" In short, this two-man thriller is but a variant of the classic hitchhiker setup of the driver becoming ever fearful of the stranger in his car and here its delivered with both aching tension and style. (...) a short that can only but leave you wanting more "

David Hall, GAY CELLULOID (UK)

--

“ Tiago Aldeia's stellar performance in the brillant short film "Cigano" by David Bonneville, won the hearts and minds of an enthralled audience. “

Luís Veríssimo, DEZANOVE (Portugal)
